Baroque Music//No Baroque Music
Dosage and Duration
This is a cross-over study. Two units of the facility were selected for the study, one providing high-level care (Unit A) and the other low-level care (Unit B). Each unit began with a 2-week observation period. At week 3, one unit was then randomly allocated to receive the music intervention for 4 weeks followed by a 2-week washout period while the other unit continued with observation. At week 9, the second unit crossed over to receive the intervention for 4 weeks while the first unit crossed over to observation. In total, the study lasted 12 weeks. During the intervention weeks, a selection of Baroque music was played from 3 pm to 7 pm on a CD player in the common area of the wards at a
volume sufficient to be heard throughout the common area but not in the individual rooms. Residents were free to wander in
and out of their rooms during this time and other music was allowed at other times.
